Octothorpes Protocol: #hashtags for the open web
As a big fan of small web, I am going to announce one of my recent huntings with you, and also as a record for myself so that I will be proud of myself in future when this technology goes mainstream.
Today is 19 Nov,
I browsed Nim’s (one of the founders) website/blog to find out the post which announced the launch of the public beta of the Octothorpes protocol (November 1 2024, 18 days before this post)
Why did I get there?
Because I was looking for a way (or maybe build something for it) to be able to re-post my blog posts links in a public url where other bloggers could also publish their links when they post online. Then I found Octothorpes today which is much more complete.
Octothorpes does more than what I wanted and had thought of.
Not only I can publish/share my posts or any website page actually with #hashtags (which are accessible by a link provided with a webring admin server). The hashtags are anchor links I add in my pages.
So my pages will be accessible by a url of the specified hashtag and an rss feed anyone can follow.
I can also bookmark and announce the pages/blogposts/urls I like in the same manner easily.
Imagine there is a server called example.com/hashtag/#bearblog where I can tag my blog posts to be listed there (on that example.com url which is our Octo ring server)
First you need to register your website/blog address at example.com and ask server admins to accept you in their webring so you can start tagging your html pages with special kind of anchor links
Octothorpes protocol in real use?
Yeah, I found out about Octothorpes while browsing Weird October actually! Which has used Octothorpes protocol in a very useful creative manner.

I wanted to share a simple screenshot of the project and a link to it, but it got closer to an article again! 😅
Because I really got excited and couldn’t stop typing🙃 So if I had any mistake in the info (and my English) sorry in advance.
Dear Nim and Nik, I wish you the best, I hope my little post become kinda helpful and my share to spread it. Let me know if you want to change any details of the post (including probable mistakes in info)
I won’t stop here, I will write much more about it and also all other valuable resources (I call huntings sometimes) I share here.
This is my way to shed light on to the valuable websites, tools and resources to help them and also help me to start a connection with like minded devs and authors to maybe collaborate in future on cool creative ideas and building/making things together.
I also hope my amazing nice readers get value from the gems I find between ten to hundred projects and website I surf. As I try to share the best of the bests to not waste your time.
I have guestbook and rss you can find on top. Drop me a line 😇
